Early Childhood Education
The Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired (SABVI) provides Early Childhood Education (ECE) services for children ages birth to five who are blind or vision impaired. Our certified teachers provide services to families and children in various settings ranging from the home to the community. Individually designed programs are developed to meet the specific needs of each child.
Our goal is to teach parents how to help their child learn to use his or her vision to the best of their ability by developing an understanding of the vision loss and the impact it has on learning. (The SABVI philosophy is that all children and their families have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills for the children to continue their educational experiences.)
Services provided include Early Intervention, Abe's Cub House Preschool, and SABVI's Youth Camps. For more information on any of these programs please contact Jennifer Eaton or by dialing 717-291-5951 ext. 4154.
Early Intervention
SABVI's Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers provide itinerant vision services to children in their homes and other settings. Teachers, along with early intervention professionals and parents, develop an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each child. This process delivers support and educational services for the child in a natural and unrestrictive setting. Through coaching methods the ECE teacher will support the child and family through developmental milestones.
Early Intervention services also helps parents understand their child's visual diagnosis and their vision needs. Teachers also provide important visual information to other professionals working with the child.
Preschool Services
SABVI's Early Childhood Education teachers provide itinerant vision services to children in their educational setting. Teachers, along with professionals and parents, develop an Individual Educational Program (IEP) for each child. This process delivers support and educational services for the child and their educational team. The IEP contains goals and specially designed instructions that will assist the child reach their greatest potential. During the preschool years children are learning pre-reading and math skills in addition to social skills.
ECE teachers provide information to the child's educational team on how the child's visual impairment will affect their development. The teachers will also provide strategies and adaptations that may reduce the affect of the visual impairment.
ABE'S CUB HOUSE
Abe's Cub House is SABVI's on-site, year-round preschool with a low student-to-teacher ratio for students ages 3-5 years old. The preschool offers a multi-sensory approach to learning. Abe’s Club House is a reverse mainstream setting which maintains a ratio of 50-percent students with vision impairments, and 50-percent without impairments.
Abe's Cub House is currently enrolling students. Morning and afternoon sessions are held Monday (8:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.) through Thursday (12:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.). Families may choose two, three or four days per week for their child. For additional information please contact Jennifer Eaton or by dialing 717-291-5951 ext. 4154.
Cub Camp
Designed by the Early Childhood Education Department, Cub Camp is a week of learning held in July of each year for the students and parents of Abe's Cub House. Instead of holding class indoors at SABVI, Cub Camp expands the classroom into the community. During the week of camp, parents and students are exposed to community activities that they can experience with all members of their families. Cub Camp provides an opportunity to see what family activities are available in the local community and give families the opportunity to meet other families involved in Abe's Cub House. In addition, the families see how all of the students interact. Some of the previous events have included bowling, visiting local children’s museums and playing baseball with the Lancaster Barnstormers.
